If your child receives Supplemental Security Income, the amount of your child support obligation will be
reduced by the amount of SSI the child receives. This can even eliminate the entire child support
obligation. Should SSI payments be discontinued, you would then be responsible for paying child
support. Furthermore, if your child support obligation as calculated by the state guidelines exceeds the
amount of SSI the child receives, you would be responsible for paying the difference. It is easy to see
how this can dramatically reduce your out-of-pocket child support payments.
