Establish Paternity for Child Support

We all agree that fathers have a moral and legal obligation to support their children.  Therefore it is important to ensure that the biological father is the one paying to support the child.  The first step in
establishing a child support order is to determine the paternity of the child.  Should you have any doubts regarding the child's paternity it is vital that you seek genetic testing prior to signing a voluntary acknowledgement of paternity.  This is a form on which you declare you are the father of the child.  The acknowledgement is often signed in the hospital, and once signed it becomes a finding of the court that you are the legal father of the child.  You can contest the  acknowledgement only within 60 days of signing.  If you have already signed a voluntary acknowledgement, courts are reluctant to break an established parent/child bond.  If you have not signed an acknowledgement of paternity, you can request genetic testing to determine the child's parentage.  In the event you are determined to be the child's father, the state may charge you for the test but this is a small price to pay should the test prove you are not the father and therefore, not responsible for paying to support the child.

As with all legal documentation and court summons, it is important for you to respond to any requests you receive from the Child Support Enforcement Agency, your ex's attorney, or officially served to you.  If your ex initiates a child support hearing and you do not respond or appear at the hearings, the court will enter a finding by default proclaiming you are the father.
