End Jail and Prison Time

Let us begin by saying we believe you should always do the best you can to support your child.
If you happen to be a father or mother who pays child support you know all to well what it feels like to constantly be on edge and worrying about the possibility of going to jail or prison in the end.

Those who have never lived with this situation should consider themselves to be very lucky, and do everything in their power to keep their families together.

We think it is actually a waste of time and money, and should end jail time when they fall behind on their child support payments. This only costs more in the long run by housing and feeding these people. While in jail or prison they do not have to pay their child support. They pay with time served, and the child receives nothing for that time anyway.

The threat of going to jail causes anxiety and depression in many parents who have a hard time keeping a steady paycheck due to the type of job they have, or because of the current economic conditions.

Contrary to popular belief, everyone who falls behind on their support is not a deadbeat. The system likes to make them feel like one most of the time, and if they ever get the chance to get ahead for once they think there is really no use. If for what ever reason they lose or leave a higher paying job, the court will try to make them continue to pay this amount because they have shown that they could do so in the past.

Why is life so different with child support? When your still together with your wife and you have a child, no one holds it over your head if you hate your job or are not getting enough hours and you find a new job that ends up paying you less but makes you happy. But when you owe child support, it is a whole different ball game. If you find a lower paying job that makes you happy, the state will still take every penny they can out of your small check and hold you responsible for the rest in the end. No matter if it leaves you broke in the end. Now if you do not pay this extra amount they could not get out of your paycheck, you will be held in contempt of court. Better hope you have some friends or family at this time that are willing to pay for your purge and keep you out of jail.

Instead of sending parents to jail and flooding the courts and jails with non violent offenders, we think they should put liens against them and take any tax refunds they may receive until it is payed off. This would help decrease the amount of back child support while keeping our jails and prisons less crowded so that violent offenders do not get lesser sentences, or get out earlier do to overcrowding.

Let us concentrate on giving people a reason to better themselves and their families without causing severe depression, that helps no one in the end. Do your part to lobby the government about jail, and help make a difference in changing this law.
